Anil is a graduate of the Film and T.V Institute of India, in Pune, India. His fellow alumni include celebrities like Naseeruddin Shah, Shakti Kapoor and lesser known actors like Rameshwari Talluri, Abha Dhulia, Faqir Nabi and others.
Anil has many film industry connections. His father, Surinder Kapoor, is a film producer. His elder brother, Boney Kapoor, is a producer, younger brother Sanjay Kapoor is also a well known Bollywood actor though not as successful. He is the brother-in-law of the actress Sridevi with whom he has starred in many films.
His sister Reena is married to Sandeep Marwah of the famous Marwah Films & Video Studios in Noida Film City. Anil's daughter, Sonam Kapoor, is starring in a film with Rishi Kapoor's son, Ranbir Kapoor.
Although successful as an actor mainly in the 1980s and 1990s, Anil has had a bad stint as a producer, when his latest film, Gandhi, My Father, though heavily appreciated by critics, failed to do well the box office. His earlier film, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja which he produced as well as starred in, was a huge disaster as well. Anil has been unlucky as a producer, but is seen as a vesatile and a hard working actor, who touched his peak, during the late 1980s.
Film career
Anil made his Bollywood debut in the 1979 film Hamare Tumhare where he played a supporting role. After a few minor roles in films such as Hum Paanch (1980) and Shakti (1982) he got his first leading role in the 1983 Hindi film Woh Saat Din. He then appeared in a Telugu film Vamsa Vriksham and played a lead role in director Mani Ratnam's debut Kannada film Pallavi Anu Pallavi. This was followed by successful Bollywood films like Mashaal (1984) for which he won his first Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award and a string of box office hits such as Meri Jung (1985) and Karma (1986). In 1987, he starred in Mr. India which was one of his biggest box office hits and shot him to superstar status.
In 1988 he starred in the hit film Tezaab and was rewarded with his first Filmfare Best Actor Award. The following year he had two more hit films, Ram Lakhan and Parinda. In 1991 he won critical praise for his performance as a middle aged man in the film Lamhe which was a box office failure but was a success Overseas. In 1992, Anil starred in Beta, for which he won a second Filmfare Best Actor Award award. After a period of little box office success for the next few years, in 1997 he had three box office successes which were Judaai, Virasat and Deewana Mastana. In 1999 once again he had three consecutive box office hits, Biwi No.1, Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain and Taal.
He won a National Best Actor Award for his role in the 2000 film Pukar. After another long period of box office flops between the years 2001 to 2004, he had his long-awaited hit with No Entry in 2005 which was one of the highest grossing films of the year.
Anil recently turned producer of the film Gandhi, My Father which focuses on the relationship between Mahatma Gandhi and his son Harilal Gandhi. The film released on August 3, 2007 and was acclaimed by critics and audiences but failed to do well at the box office.
Personal life
Anil grew up in Chembur, Mumbai and went to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School. He married Sunita Kapoor in 1984; the couple have two daughters and a son. Daughter Sonam Kapoor will make her debut alongside Ranbir Kapoor, the son of actor Rishi Kapoor, in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's next film Saawariya. He has been known to stand by Shilpa Shetty through the allegations that her family has link with the Indian mafia. Standing 5'10, he is a well established actor in the bollwood industry.
